Martial Arts Training - Learn How To Speed Train Effectively

Speed training is not all about finishing the workout as fast as possible. It is designed to give your muscles more explosive power and narrow your reaction time. In Martial Arts timing is everything. When you are sparring and you notice an opening, you have to strike immediately. As your skills improve, that opening will decrease, making it more of a challenge for you to strike. Be wary though some martial artists show an opening on purpose when sparring with you to set up a counterattack. If you take the bait as intended they will often counter your move with a move they intended to do all along. As your skills improve, overtime you will see this ruse for what it is and learn to know if a particular opening is a deliberate trap or not, or a mistake where you can use your advantage.

Many techniques rely on pure speed for their effectiveness. If you are acting to slow, then it will not pull off. The worst case scenario is that you will get hit, but at least this will then motivate you to speed up your combat skills. Often to perform a technique to its fullest you will need explosive power to coincide with your speed. You need to be able to go from standing still to full speed and power as quickly as possible.

Speed training is essential in your martial arts journey. Plyometric drills such as leapfrog, hopscotch and foot races are great ways to get you into shape to speed up your techniques. I would advise though that you build up some strength before you attempt them as they can be tiring. It is a good idea to strengthen your quads and hamstring muscles to protect your knees. If you have a history of knee trouble or find that these drills are hard on your knees then I would suggest avoiding them.

By combining explosive power drill and drills to test your reaction time such as the sparring techniques described, you can improve your speed considerably whilst developing pinpoint timing and agile techniques.
