Super Karate Made Easy is one of my favorite books of all time. It demonstrates the power Karate has over people, while being tastefully and tastelessly worthless. It was one of the first books on the Martial Arts, and it sold millions, and people drank it up like it was holy water mixed with cheap bourbon.
It was written by a fellow named Moja Rone back in the fifties, and nobody knows to this day who Moja Rone is. Or was. Or anything about him. What makes this martial arts book truly unique is not the less than comic book quality artwork, it is the descriptions of the less than useful techniques, except in the most generic sense.
Here's a sample: It's Tuesday or Wednesday, but your opponent is not waiting to deliver his Sunday punch...you've taken his Sunday best. Now you retaliate and knock him into the middle of next week. Sounds like ghetto trash talk, as done in the fifties. With encouragement like this it's no wonder that gullible school boys bought the book in droves. The real question, however, is how good is the information in the book? It describes how things should be done adequately, and so generically that no system could lay claim to it.
And, while there is some descriptive value of the basics, it offers some gems that could get a guy killed, or, at best have him harm himself by applying some of the techniques. For instance: It can be mastered quicker than other Karate offensive moves. It is frequently used in striking your opponent in the solar plexus. He is talking about the Single Finger Strike.
Now, I don't know about you, but striking somebody in the belly with a straight out index finger is not something I would tell a person would save his life...and don't bother with none of those silly fist type punches. Good Lard! The fellow is going to break his finger at best! My recommendation is that this book is worthwhile not for the karate practitioner, but for the internet marketer. You can learn to write all sorts of trashy descriptions that will excite ten year olds and get them to part with their allowance.
And, if you want real technique...look elsewhere. The ISBN for this piece of history is, uh...there ain't no ISBN. Oops. But it is ranked #6,429,729 in Amazon Books. That should make it easy to find. And the name, should you be interested, is Super Karate Made Easy.
